In chapter 40, Johanan warned Gedaliah that plots were in place to take his life. To his loss, Gedaliah ignored the warning and here in chapter 41, the plot successfully comes to fruition. In the aftermath, the remaining people of Judah plan to flee to Egypt, a plan which God, through Jeremiah, reveals as folly.
