Don't Deny Him

“The fool has said in his heart, ‘There is no God’…” (Psa. 14:1)

There are times, as Christians, that we want to pull our hair out. Maybe it is when someone is sharing false teachings, a person we have been talking to refuses to grasp what we are sharing, and the list goes on and on. Well, how about those that vehemently express disdain towards God? It is so sad that too often the ones most vocal on the subject of God are those that show complete utter disbelief in His existence. To hear someone say such a preposterous statement, “I know there is no God” is ludicrous. In this real-life instance, a possible reaction would be to shake the person or slap them upside the head as to such a foolish remark. A cooler rational mind can say, “What definitive proof do you have to make such a statement?”

Often the atheist defeat their arguments. Have you ever heard an atheist use the words “I pray” or “thank God?” Why would those phrases ever escape their mouths? Admittedly, they surely know the name of “Jesus” and “Christ,” but it is used only in a blasphemous manner. C.S. Lewis once remarked, “Atheists express their rage against God although in their view He does not exist.”

Listen to some of the most well-known people to ever have lived and what they had to say about faith. Philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche said, “After coming into contact with a religious man I always feel I must wash my hands.” One of the most popular modern-day thinkers, Neil deGrasse Tyson, stated, “The more I learn about the universe, the less convinced I am that there’s any sort of benevolent force that has anything to do with it, at all.” In contrast to those ardent atheists, Ronald Reagan commented, “Sometimes when I’m faced with an atheist, I am tempted to invite him to the greatest gourmet dinner that one could ever serve, and when we have finished eating that magnificent dinner, to ask him if he believes there’s a cook.” Some things are undeniable, but many people find it easier to refuse to acknowledge the obvious.

The history of out-spoken animosity for God and His people is vast. People often perceive any evil in the world or any personal struggle as reasons to deny the existence of God and will attack those that say otherwise. There is no question that many unbelievers suppress the reality of God due to personal life disappointments. If life doesn’t go the way we want it to, of course, the obvious choice is to blame God and not trust Him. Anyone that suppresses the truth will ultimately experience the wrath of God (cf. Rom. 1:18ff).

About 15 years ago, some atheists came out on the internet urging other atheists to proclaim their unbelief in the Holy Spirit. They called this the “Blasphemy Challenge.” The challenge was based on the passages which declare that blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven” (cf. Matt. 12:31f; Mk. 3:28f; Lk. 12:10). Men and women were to record themselves specifically saying, “I deny the Holy Spirit.” People were doing this with an air of arrogance and pleasure. Of course, Christians would recognize this as appalling and irrational behavior. A believer must see this as a disturbing show of Satan’s ability to blind the eyes of the unbelievers (cf. 2 Cor. 4:4) and feel a deep sense of sorrow over these poor souls.

No one can be forced to believe in God. Believers can only hope that there is time given to the unbeliever before it is too late. Jesus specified that whoever denies Him before men, He will in turn deny the same before the Father (cf. Matt. 10:33). The Lord has said, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you” (Jn. 8:31f). Anyone who chooses not to acknowledge the truth of God in His word is lost.
