Martin Luther wrote this hymn during the Reformation that has struck a chord to the present day. It's based on Psalm 46 and the protection God offers to His people, especially in times of difficulty. According to Scottish theologian James Moffatt this is, "The greatest hymn of the greatest man of the greatest period of German history."
